Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Sami Abi al-Mona called on Thursday for urgent humanitarian action to support the people of Sweida, who have been deeply affected by recent violent clashes.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Abi al-Mona described a dire situation in the Syrian governorate, pointing to significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction.
“We had hoped for an agreement before the situation deteriorated. What happened in Sweida is a heinous attack that we strongly condemn,” he said. Steering clear of political escalation, the Sheikh emphasized that humanitarian relief must now take precedence. “We are committed to fulfilling our moral duty and standing by our people in their time of need,” he added.
The Druze spiritual leader denounced attempts to tear apart the social fabric of the region, calling for unity and cohesion between communities. “No Druze-Sunni discord will be tolerated in Sweida or its surroundings,” he affirmed, citing his continuous dialogue with Grand Mufti Abdel Latif Derian.
Abi al-Mona announced the launch of a broad humanitarian campaign aimed at meeting the urgent needs of Sweida’s residents. The initiative will focus on delivering vital aid, treating the wounded, rebuilding destroyed infrastructure, and compensating for damages caused by looting.
He also called for the immediate lifting of the siege on the city and demanded a “thorough and transparent investigation” into the killings, stressing that truth and justice are essential to overcoming the tragedy.
