President Joseph Aoun welcomed Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian and a delegation of regional muftis to the Presidential Palace in Baabda on Thursday, stressing that Lebanon has reached a “pivotal and possibly fateful crossroads.” In an atmosphere he described as both critical and sensitive, Aoun underscored that the country’s survival depends on unity, cooperation, and solidarity among all communities.

“We are at a defining moment,” Aoun said. “Our unity, cooperation, and solidarity are essential to face all challenges.” He cautioned against repeating the mistakes of the past, when Lebanese groups sought support from external forces against one another. “This has led to serious consequences,” he added. “I want to draw strength from my partner and brother inside Lebanon, regardless of who the external actors may be.”

Aoun emphasized Lebanon’s ability to withstand pressure through national cohesion. “We will remain because we are fortified by our unity. No one will be able to steer us in another direction,” he said, adding that every Lebanese group contributes a unique value to the country.

He highlighted the Sunni community’s essential role in preserving the nation's identity. “Sunnis in Lebanon offer two core values: moderation at home and a clear affirmation of Lebanon’s belonging to its Arab environment,” Aoun said.

He also stressed that no group can be excluded or claim greater merit. “Mufti Derian is the Grand Mufti of the Republic, not only of the Sunnis, and our coordination is based on safeguarding Lebanon,” he said.

Seeking to reassure the public, Aoun added: “Lebanon is fine. There will be no return to the language of war. Our ceiling is Lebanon.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to accountability. “We have opened the corruption file and will see it through. Corruption is our central issue, it has no sect, no religion, and no political color.”

Mufti Derian described the meeting as “exceptional,” noting that the two maintain continuous communication and coordination, particularly in light of the country’s ongoing political and security challenges.

Derian praised President Aoun’s commitment to his constitutional role and his active engagement at both Arab and international levels to secure Lebanon’s presence and interests.

He further highlighted the critical importance of continued cooperation among the country’s three branches of government, noting that such coordination is essential to preserving Lebanon’s stability and serving its people.

Later in the afternoon, the Mufti met with Speaker Nabih Berri, in Ain el-Tineh.
