Over the July 4 weekend, Jurassic World: Rebirth dominated the box office with a thunderous $91.5 million debut, far outpacing the competition. The film's international appeal underscores the enduring global fascination with dinosaur-fueled action.

“Jurassic World: Rebirth” — the latest entry in the blockbuster dinosaur franchise — stomped all over the July 4 weekend competition, debuting at a massive $91.5 million at the North American box office, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The Universal film stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, and takes audiences back to an abandoned island research facility — once the site of the original Jurassic Park — where dark secrets and genetically enhanced dinosaurs still roam.

“This is a fantastic opening for the seventh film in an action-adventure monster franchise,” said David A. Gross, analyst at Franchise Entertainment Research.
“The series has always performed especially well overseas, and so far, international numbers are excellent. Dinosaur action speaks every language and transcends borders.”

F1: The Movie, the Apple and Warner Bros. collaboration starring Brad Pitt as a washed-up Formula One driver getting one last shot at redemption, dropped to second place with $26.1 million, according to Exhibitor Relations.

In third place was How to Train Your Dragon, the live-action reboot of the beloved 2010 animated film from Universal and DreamWorks Animation, which brought in $11 million.
The family-friendly tale follows Hiccup (played by Mason Thames), a young Viking who forms a life-changing friendship with a dragon named Toothless.

Disney/Pixar’s newest original film Elio took fourth place with $5.7 million in the U.S. and Canada.
The animated feature follows a boy who’s mistaken by aliens as Earth’s official ambassador. The voice cast includes Academy Award winner Zoe Saldana.

Rounding out the top five was Columbia Pictures’ zombie sequel 28 Years Later, earning $4.6 million.
Directed by Danny Boyle, the third installment of the 28 Days Later saga is set, as its title implies, more than a generation after the initial Rage Virus outbreak.

Here’s how the rest of the top 10 played out:

M3GAN 2.0 – $3.8 million

Lilo & Stitch – $3.8 million

Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning – $2.7 million

Materialists – $1.3 million
