Syrian authorities announced on Tuesday the arrest of General Mowafaq Nadhir Haidar, former commander of the Syrian regime’s 3rd Armored Division, notorious for his role at the infamous Qatifa checkpoint, known by locals as the “Checkpoint of Death.”

The checkpoint, located along the Damascus-Homs highway near the division's headquarters, gained a terrifying reputation during the war for being a site of arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances and summary executions targeting civilians and army defectors.

Syria’s Internal Security Directorate in Latakia confirmed that General Haidar has been transferred to the Counterterrorism Department for questioning over alleged war crimes and serious human rights violations.

He is accused of playing a central role in regime-led military raids across multiple regions of Syria, carried out by loyalist militias during the country’s brutal conflict.
