The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has disbursed LL42 billion to cover non-scheduled surgical procedures.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Directorate on Tuesday, NSSF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the health sector and providing necessary financial backing to contracted hospitals.

NSSF Director General Dr. Mohammad Karaki announced the release of a new payment to cover non-itemized surgical procedures. This marks the second disbursement within one week, a step aimed at accelerating payments to hospitals and doctors while maintaining essential medical services amid Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis.

According to the statement, the decision, officially signed on May 12, 2025 (Decision No. 390), directed the immediate transfer of funds to hospitals and affiliated physicians. The payments were processed the following day, on May 13.

This latest payment brings the total amount disbursed in 2025 for these procedures to approximately 752 billion LBP. Additionally, 448 billion LBP have been allocated to dialysis treatments and 367 billion LBP for general healthcare services, including medical consultations and medications for insured individuals.

This brings the total sum disbursed by the NSSF since January to approximately LBP1.567 trillion.

Karaki also revealed that additional financial advances are expected soon. These will be directed toward non-recurring hospital expenses, such as intensive care services. The disbursements will be made following approval by the NSSF Board of Directors and endorsement by the supervisory authorities. This move is intended to strengthen trust in the NSSF and improve hospital accessibility for insured patients, particularly following the implementation of updated tariff rates for itemized medical acts.

Karaki concluded by affirming NSSF’s commitment to developing practical strategies to secure financial liquidity for healthcare institutions, ensuring they can continue delivering quality services. He emphasized that these measures are part of a broader vision to protect Lebanon’s health security and guarantee citizens’ right to access optimal medical care.

He also announced that updated tariffs for certain medical imaging procedures—including PET scans, MRIs, and CT scans—will come into effect in the coming days.
