Emmanuel Macron called on Wednesday for the United States to "rush to lift sanctions" against Syria, "with conditions," and to "maintain" its military operations against the Islamic State in the country.

"The interest of everyone, including the Americans, is today (...) to act in support of lifting sanctions against the Syrian people," and "to delay as much as possible the withdrawal of these forces from Syria," said the French president during a press conference with Syrian transitional leader Ahmad al-Sharaa in Paris.

Macron said he had urged his visiting Syrian counterpart, Ahmed al-Sharaa, to protect all Syrians, adding that Paris would back "a gradual lifting of EU sanctions" if he stabilized the country.

Macron said he had told Sharaa that the president "must do everything to assure the protection of all Syrians without exception" after "unacceptable" killings in clashes that affected the Alawite and Druze minorities in recent months.
