Former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt strongly condemned the latest Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory, including areas near Damascus, calling them a “flagrant violation of Syrian sovereignty” and warning that they “do not contribute to the political resolution” currently underway with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

His statement comes amid rising sectarian violence in Syria, particularly targeting the Druze community in the suburbs of Jaramana, Sahnaya and the southern province of Sweida. Clashes between pro-regime armed groups and Druze factions have left more than 100 people dead this week, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Syria's top Druze religious leader, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, described the attacks as an “unjustified genocidal campaign” and called for immediate international intervention to protect civilians.

Israel, which has long positioned itself as a protector of the Druze minority in the region, has threatened to take military action if the Syrian government fails to safeguard the community. Following a warning strike near Damascus earlier this week, Israeli warplanes reportedly struck the outskirts of the presidential palace early Friday morning.

Amid this growing crisis, Jumblatt urged Arab nations and the international community to “stand with Syria and support its efforts to build a new state and ensure national security.” He also called for pressure on Israel to end its repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty, both by air and land, and to withdraw from occupied Syrian territories.
