Gen. Michael Leeney: New Chief of Ceasefire Commission

US Army General Michael J. Leeney has officially assumed the presidency of the ceasefire monitoring commission between Lebanon and Israel, succeeding his compatriot, General Jasper Jeffers.

Born in 1966 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Michael J. Leeney is a seasoned general officer in the US Army. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in history and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the field artillery branch.

Over the course of his career, he earned additional qualifications in infantry, armor and air defense.

He has completed a wide range of specialized military training in areas such as fire support coordination, joint command, logistics, strategic operations and allied force support. He also holds a master’s degree in strategic studies from the US Army War College.

Leeney’s career includes numerous command and leadership positions both in the United States and abroad. He has served in South Korea, Egypt, Afghanistan and Kuwait.

He was chief of staff for the Train, Advise and Assist Command – South mission in Afghanistan, before becoming commander of the 40th Infantry Division.

In 2023, he took command of Task Force Spartan in Kuwait, and in October 2024, he was appointed deputy commander of US Army Central and the US 3rd Army.

General Leeney has received multiple US and international decorations, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal and various medals recognizing his service in Afghanistan, South Korea and in multinational operations.
