The Lebanese Parliament Bureau met on Tuesday in Ain el-Tineh under the leadership of Speaker Nabih Berri to finalize the agenda for the legislative session scheduled for Thursday.

The meeting focused on several high-priority draft laws, including a proposal to amend Lebanon’s banking secrecy regulations and plans for the upcoming municipal elections.

Following the meeting, Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab stated that “the banking secrecy bill is at the top of the legislative agenda.” He firmly rejected any suggestion of delaying the municipal elections, asserting that Parliament remains committed to holding them in May, as scheduled.

“Any proposed law that could obstruct the elections will face strong resistance,” he warned.

Also on the agenda is a fast-tracked draft law, already approved by the government, intended to facilitate the reconstruction of buildings damaged by recent Israeli attacks.

Another urgent proposal, introduced by Bou Saab, aims to increase support for Lebanon’s struggling education sector.

Addressing Beirut’s specific electoral framework, Bou Saab noted that lawmakers are in discussions to amend the capital’s municipal election law.

The goal, he said, is to move forward with the vote without disrupting the authority of existing local bodies.

In response to criticism that Parliament is stalling key legislation, Bou Saab pushed back, “Contrary to public perception, nothing is stuck in the drawers. In fact, some standard draft laws are progressing faster than those marked as urgent.”
