For the first time in its history, the Cannes Festival has unveiled a dual official poster. The design pays tribute to the iconic beach scene from Claude Lelouch’s Un homme et une femme.
The Cannes Film Festival unveiled on Monday a special dual official poster for its 78th edition, celebrating the unforgettable scene from Claude Lelouch’s classic Un homme et une femme—a first in the festival’s history.
This year’s posters, launched ahead of the event taking place from May 13 to 24, feature actors Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant embracing during their emotional reunion on the beach at Deauville. The design is printed double-sided, with one image on each face.
“This embrace—an anagram of ‘eternity’—is perhaps the most iconic in cinema. Because you can’t separate a man and a woman in love. Because this man and this woman are inseparable, Cannes has, for the first time, chosen to unveil a dual official poster,” organizers said in a press statement.
“In an age marked by division, control, and isolation, the Cannes Festival aims to (re)unite,” they added, referencing today’s somber global climate.
Shot in 1965, Un homme et une femme won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1966, followed by the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay in 1967.
“This film was a miracle. And miracles can't be explained. We thought we were making a simple little film. We never imagined it would travel the world, win Oscars, and bring home the Palme d’Or,” said Claude Lelouch on France 5’s C à vous on Monday evening.
“I’m feeling deeply emotional tonight, because all of these people are gone now. They’ve moved on—somewhere—and soon, I’ll be joining them,” added the 87-year-old director.
