Labor Minister Mohammad Haidar on Friday led a key meeting of the Ministry of Labor’s Price Index Committee to discuss the salaries and allowances of private sector employees.
Regarding retirement, Haidar recalled the adoption last November of a new law establishing a retirement and social protection system. He stated that the implementation decrees are currently being developed in collaboration with the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) and emphasized the ministry’s commitment to accelerating the process.
On the matter of the minimum wage, the minister clarified that no figure has yet been set, favoring a rigorous and responsible approach: “We do not want to throw out figures randomly or make decisions that could destabilize the economy.”
The meeting was attended by representatives from the public administration, employers, labor unions, the Economic and Social Council, academia, as well as key institutions such as Social Security and the Central Administration of Statistics.
Following what were described as “thorough, frank, and responsible” discussions, participants agreed to create a small working group tasked with developing concrete proposals. This group will hold a series of intensive meetings starting Monday to present its recommendations by April 28.
The priorities identified include: raising the minimum wage, increasing the school allowance, boosting family benefits, and revising social assistance, health coverage, and transportation allowances.
The results will be reviewed at a plenary meeting of the Committee on April 28 at 10:00 AM, which will be followed by a public announcement.
The minister also announced the adoption of a clear roadmap to guide future social decisions, along with mandatory bimonthly meetings to monitor the economic situation.
