Council of Ministers Approves Draft Law for Bank Restructuring

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam chaired a session of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday morning, which was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri and the Ministers of Finance, Yassine Jaber; Culture, Ghassan Salameh; Energy and Water, Joe Saddi; Tourism, Laura Lahoud; Social Affairs, Haneen Sayed; Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Youssef Rajji; Economy and Trade, Amer Bisat; Displaced and State Minister for Technology Affairs and Artificial Intelligence, Kamal Shehadeh; Interior and Municipalities, Ahmad al-Hajjar; Justice, Adel Nassar; Telecommunications, Charles Hage; Youth and Sports, Nora Bayrakdarian; Education, Rima Karami; Industry, Joe Issa al-Khoury; Administrative Development, Fadi Makki; Labor, Mohammad Haidar; Public Works and Transport, Fayez Rasamny; Agriculture, Nizar Hani; Information, Paul Morcos; Environment, Tamara el-Zein; Public Health, Rakan Nassereddine.

Also present were the Director General of the Presidency of the Republic, Antoine Choucair, and the Secretary General of the Council of Ministers, Judge Mahmoud Makiyeh.

During the meeting, the Council of Ministers approved the draft law on the reorganization of banks and decided to reconvene on Friday and Saturday to continue the discussion.

At the end of the discussions, Minister of Information Paul Morcos announced, “As a first step, the government has adopted a bill to amend banking secrecy legislation, with a view to remedying the financial crisis.” 

“We hope that Parliament will pass the laws amending banking secrecy and reforming the banking sector, an essential condition for addressing the deficit. We are now on the road to recovery,” he added.

Finally, Morcos pointed out that “the draft legislation currently under consideration by the Council is generating keen interest, both nationally and internationally.”
