Houthi media reported multiple US strikes on Wednesday in areas around Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, as the US military said its campaign against the Iran-backed insurgents was ongoing.

According to the Houthis' Al-Masirah TV, "an American attack targeted the capital Sanaa... and the area of the town of Saada" in the north, later adding that strikes had also hit the district of Al-Sawadiya, southeast of Sanaa.

The United States launched heavy strikes against the Yemeni group beginning on Saturday, prompting mass protests in the war-torn country and retaliatory attacks against shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

On Saturday, the Houthi-run health ministry said US strikes killed 53 people and wounded nearly 100 others. The United States has said the attacks killed several top Houthi officials.

Washington has pledged overwhelming force until the Houthis stop firing on key shipping routes.

Part of Iran's "axis of resistance" against the United States and Israel, the Houthis have attacked shipping in the trade lanes during the Gaza war, claiming they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians.

The Houthis on Wednesday claimed to have carried out an attack on American warships in the Red Sea, the fourth strike they have announced over the past three days.

Yemen has seen more than a decade of civil war, with the Houthis controlling the capital Sanaa since 2014.
