The Mazzeh neighborhood in Damascus was, on Monday morning, the scene of violent clashes between Syrian security forces and armed elements from the previous regime, marking an unprecedented development since the beginning of the confrontations last Thursday.
According to “Al-Araby Television Network”, based in Qatar, an armed group attacked one of the centers where internal security forces are stationed, triggering a fierce clash. This led to heightened security measures in the neighborhood. Checkpoints were set up to inspect vehicles and verify the presence of stolen cars, in response to similar incidents recently reported in the capital.
Meanwhile, “Al-Jazeera” reported that Syrian security forces arrested two of the assailants, confirming that they were part of the "loyalists of the ousted regime" and had carried out the attack on an internal security post.
Information remains contradictory as Syrian authorities remain tight-lipped about the details of the attack. Some sources suggest a surprise assault using grenades against a security patrol. Residents of the neighborhood indicated that the attack took place near the Ministry of Information and close to the political security service.
The newly elected Syrian president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, gave a speech on Sunday before the worshipers at Al-Chafihi Mosque in the Mazzeh neighborhood, after performing the dawn prayer. Worshipers were surprised to see him among them at this mosque, which he regularly attended and is located in the neighborhood where he grew up with his family.
