Tarek Bitar, the judge in charge of investigating the Beirut port explosion, questioned on Friday three suspects as part of the ongoing probe into the devastating August 4, 2020 blast in which more than 200 people were killed and large swathes of the city destroyed.

Sister company Huna Lubnan reported that the suspects include Brigadier General Adel Francis, former head of the Supreme Council of Customs, Brigadier General Asaad al-Tufaili, and former Beirut Port Customs Director Moussa Hazimeh. Bitar decided to keep them under investigation.

An interrogation session into the case is scheduled for next Friday for retired General Security Brigadier General Muhammad Hassan Moukalled.

With Moukalled's questioning, Bitar will have completed the first phase of the probe that included 12 new suspects. He will then begin scheduling interrogations for others including politicians, security leaders, and judges.
