To kick off the new Lebanese league season, Beirut Club and Hoops played out an intense duel on Thursday afternoon at Beirut’s Chiyah Forum. In a game that was tight right to the end, the home team had to dig deep to win by the narrowest of margins, 82-80.
Fresh from winning the Dubai tournament with the Beirut Club, coach Jad al-Hajj fielded a starting five comprising Sergio Darwish, Ali Haidar, Ali Mezher, Ricky Ledo and Kenneth Kadji.
Hoops Surprises from the Outset
Hoops took Beirut Club by surprise, imposing an intense rhythm from the outset and putting the home side in a difficult position. More aggressive in attack and well organized defensively, the visitors took a slight lead, ending the first quarter with a narrow advantage (21-20).
The second quarter saw both teams respond blow for blow, with neither able to gain a significant lead. The intensity picked up a notch, but Hoops managed to maintain its lead thanks to an impressive outside address. Beirut, for its part, suffered in this area, missing all eight of its three-point attempts. The result: a four-point deficit at the break (48-44).
AJ English was the standout performer of the first half for Hoops. With five successful three-pointers, he constantly put the Beirut Club defense under pressure, forcing the home team to rethink their defensive strategy.
Beirut Reacts at the Right Moment
After the break, the duel remained tightly contested. The two teams went at each other blow for blow, each possession becoming decisive. Beirut Club, more diligent defensively, managed to turn the tide at the end of the third quarter, taking a narrow four-point lead (69-65).
In the final act, Beirut Club’s experience made the difference. More composed in crunch time, Hajj’s men capitalized on crucial offensive rebounds and improved shooting efficiency. Hoops didn’t let up until the final seconds, but Beirut held on to win on the wire (82-80).
A Hard-Fought Victory
“Hoops was a formidable opponent, and this championship promises to be very competitive,” said Hajj after the game. The Beirut Club, though capable of improvement, showed character to come away with this first victory.
Next challenge: a clash against Antonine, scheduled for Sunday, February 9. Beirut Club will have to raise its game if it is to confirm its ambitions this season.
