Lebanon's Ambassador to Germany and UNESCO, Mustapha Adib, was officially nominated by Lebanon on Tuesday for membership on the International Court of Justice (ICJ), following instructions from President Joseph Aoun.
This nomination follows Judge Nawaf Salam's resignation from the ICJ after accepting the role of Prime Minister-designate to form Lebanon's new government.
It is important to highlight that the United Nations Security Council has set May 27, 2025, as the date for the election of a new ICJ member to replace Salam and fill the vacant position.
Prime Minister-designate Salam's resignation from his position on the International Court of Justice occurred nearly two years before the conclusion of his term on February 5, 2027, both as a member and president of the court. According to Article 14 of the Court's Statute, the United Nations Security Council will now determine the timing for the election of Judge Salam's successor.
The newly elected judge will serve out the remainder of Judge Salam's term as a member of the court, as outlined in Article 15 of the Statute.
