On Thursday, caretaker Minister of Agriculture Abbas al-Hajj Hassan launched Lebanon’s National Drought Management Plan, in collaboration with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development. This plan is the first of its kind in Lebanon’s efforts to combat drought, positioning Lebanon among the last Arab countries to implement such a strategy.

During a workshop organized by the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, Minister Hajj Hassan highlighted that the National Drought Management Plan is particularly timely, given the global challenges of desertification, drought and climate change. He emphasized the plan’s significance for Lebanon, especially following the challenges it has faced in recent years, including the effects of the last war and the growing impact of climate change, such as reduced rainfall and rising temperatures.

The minister explained that the plan’s objectives include mitigating the adverse effects of drought on both the economy and the environment. It also aims to strengthen regional cooperation, with Lebanon working closely with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development. Minister Hajj Hassan stressed the importance of unified Arab action to confront climate-related challenges and ensure food security in the region.

The minister concluded by underscoring that this plan represents a critical step toward identifying sustainable solutions to Lebanon’s drought issues and those affecting the region.
