Following the appointment of Judge Nawaf Salam as Lebanon’s Prime Minister (PM), President Joseph Aoun spoke to journalists outside the presidential palace on Monday, expressing his hope that the subsequent formation of the government would be “smooth and quick.” “We have plenty of work ahead of us,” he added.

At the end of a long parliamentary consultation day, President Aoun went to the outer hall of the presidential palace, greeted journalists and thanked them for the effort they put in during the day.

He emphasized that appointing the PM was ultimately the role of the Members of Parliament, a decision he fully respects. “We have completed the first step, and the second step is the formation of the government. Hopefully, it will be smooth and quick, as we have great opportunities through external support,” he told journalists.

The President shared that he had recently held a conversation with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, who reiterated international support for Lebanon, contingent on the swift formation of a new government.

“They are waiting for us, but we need to move forward once we have formed a government,” added the President.

In response to questions about potential obstacles, the President requested that discussions about any difficulties be left for later, focusing instead on the optimism surrounding the formation process.
