The heist film Den of Thieves 2: Pantera claimed the top spot at the North American box office this weekend with $15.5 million in ticket sales, marking a strong opening for the highly anticipated sequel.

Lionsgate's heist thriller Den of Thieves 2: Pantera opened at the top of the North American box office this weekend, earning an estimated $15.5 million, industry sources reported Sunday. "This is a good opening for the second episode in a crime thriller series," said analyst David A. Gross. "These movies are made for audiences, not critics."

Gerald Butler stars as Los Angeles sheriff "Big Nick," pursuing a dangerous gang of thieves across Europe. The story draws inspiration from the $100 million Antwerp heist of 2003, the largest diamond robbery in history.

Disney's animated feature Mufasa: The Lion King dropped one spot from last weekend to $13.2 million. Its total ticket sales have now surpassed the half-billion-dollar mark, with $188.7 million domestically and $350 million internationally.

Paramount's action-comedy Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also fell one spot to third place, earning $11 million from Friday through Sunday, according to Exhibitor Relations. Meanwhile, Focus Features’ Nosferatu, a Dracula-inspired vampire film, slipped one position to fourth, with $6.8 million.

Rounding out the top five is Disney’s blockbuster Moana 2, which dropped from fourth to fifth, taking in $6.5 million. After seven weeks in theaters, the film is nearing the billion-dollar mark, with $434.9 million domestically and $554 million internationally.

The 2024 domestic box office, while boosted by a strong six-week stretch, ended the year about three percent below 2023 levels and roughly 24 percent below the pre-pandemic average.

Completing the top 10 are Wicked and A Complete Unknown, each earning $5 million, Babygirl with $3.1 million, The Last Showgirl at $1.5 million, and Gladiator II with $1.2 million.

This strong opening for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera highlights the enduring appeal of action-packed thrillers. As audiences return to theaters, the film industry continues to recover and captivate moviegoers worldwide.
