Judge Nawaf Salam was nominated Monday as the next prime minister with the support of 84 MPs following a long day of parliamentary consultations with President Joseph Aoun at Baabda presidential palace.
Salam, current president of the International Court of Justice, was favored over his "opponent," caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati who got 9 votes, while 35 MPs, including Hezbollah and Amal, refrained from nominating any candidate.
Salam who is based in The Hague, Netherlands, has secured support from a significant number of independent MPs and opposition members, following MP Fouad Makhzoumi's withdrawal from the race.
