The Lebanese-Canadian Coordinating Committee (CCLC) has presented its “vision for the Lebanese president,” as a session to elect a new head of state is scheduled for Thursday. “We need a president who puts the well-being of the nation above his personal interests (...) who unites all Lebanese (...) who ensures respect for the Taif Agreement and the Lebanese Constitution and prevents any violation of the texts, and who prioritizes the country's sovereignty and justice.”

In a letter addressed to Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs and members of the Canadian Parliament, the committee stated that the “president must maintain Lebanon's neutrality in regional and global conflicts, while firmly implementing international resolutions calling for disarmament and the restoration of state authority.”

He must also “implement reforms to fight corruption, modernize governance and create a transparent mechanism for reconstruction,” while “resisting all external pressures,” the text stresses.

It added: “Lebanon's sovereignty is non-negotiable, and armed factions outside the authority of the State must be stripped of their weapons and placed under the exclusive control of the Lebanese Army.”

Commenting on the latest developments in the region, the Canadian committee felt that “the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria and the decline of the axis of resistance offer a historic opportunity for the rebirth of Lebanon.”

In an address to Hezbollah, the committee said, “It must hand over its weapons to the Lebanese state or prepare for renewed conflict.” “Lebanon must detach itself from Gaza and Iran, and Hezbollah must join the ranks of a free and independent country.” It also urged Lebanese MPs “to act with courage and integrity, putting national interests above personal or partisan considerations.”
