Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Archbishop of Beirut Elias Audi expressed his hope that a president of the Republic is elected “with a Lebanese will and conviction in his person and competence.”
He also hoped that the next president will be “a sieve through which no evil or corruption passes through” in his sermon during Wednesday’s Divine Liturgy service at St. George’s Cathedral in Nejmeh Square, Downtown Beirut.
Additionally, he made clear that the new president should “establish the principle of justice, make everyone subject to the law, hold deficient people accountable, restore prestige to the state and restore channels of communication.”
“In order for the country to move towards the light, it is not enough to have a president, a cabinet and a parliament; the most important role is for the people,” he continued, emphasizing the importance of focusing on a state governed by the constitution and law.
Audi concluded by asserting that the state should provide stability and security and stimulate production, “while relying on the Lebanese people’s creativity and innovation.”
