The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, acknowledging the “new situation” and emphasizing its readiness to support both Lebanon and Israel in this phase.
In a statement released on Wednesday, UNIFIL confirmed that it would continue performing its mandated tasks and had already begun adjusting its operations accordingly.
The peacekeepers, who come from 48 different countries, expressed their commitment to cooperating with all relevant partners to ensure the success of the cessation of hostilities.
UNIFIL also stressed the importance of fully implementing the letter and spirit of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which has long been a guiding framework for peace in the region.
The resolution’s implementation is seen as a key path to lasting peace. UNIFIL expressed concern over the suffering of civilians on both sides of the Blue Line, urging all parties to uphold the resolution’s provisions to prevent further harm.
The peacekeeping force remains in place, ready to support Lebanon and Israel in the aftermath of the conflict and in their efforts to maintain peace.
