What do our athletes do in times of war? This is Beirut met with these athletes whose activities have been interrupted by the ongoing conflict in Lebanon. Today, Serge Kouyoumjian, a talented futsal player, shares the challenges he is facing and how he is adapting to this difficult period.

How are you experiencing this period of war, and what impact is it having on your daily life as an athlete (training, etc.)?

In these difficult times, I focus on myself, both physically and mentally, to keep moving forward despite the challenges. I work on specific aspects like my running, explosiveness and overall physical condition. These are essential elements that help me stay tactically effective on the field. That said, nothing replaces team training sessions. The lack of contact, interaction and team spirit always takes its toll. Even when training alone, the bond we share on the field is irreplaceable and plays a crucial role in our development as athletes.

How do you think sport can play a role in reconciliation and the reconstruction of Lebanon after the war?

Sport is a universal language that transcends barriers of religion, politics or personal differences. On the field, we don’t see a Christian or Muslim athlete — we see Lebanese people fighting for a common cause. Through sport, we can build a positive image, full of discipline, respect and consistency. National teams and athletes representing Lebanon abroad can become a symbol of unity for the entire country. If each of us puts aside divisions and comes together around the Lebanese flag, we can inspire a new generation and give hope to those who think everything is lost.

How do you see the future of sport in Lebanon once the situation improves?

I am convinced that if we do things the right way — with the right people in the right positions and a genuine will to succeed — Lebanese sport will rise from the ashes. We have immense potential, but it needs to be supported by solid infrastructure, a long-term vision and real commitment. Sport can become a national pride, a field where Lebanon shines on the international stage. With seriousness, hard work and a bit of patience, there is no doubt that we can build a bright future.
