The Mont-La-Salle Sports Palace (Ain Saade) hosted the Lebanese Veterans Fencing Championship, a landmark event that beautifully concluded the 2024 season of the sport. Organized by the Lebanese Fencing Federation, the competition brought together the country's top veteran fencers, representing clubs affiliated with the federation. With high-level bouts in all three disciplines — épée, foil, and sabre — the event attracted an enthusiastic crowd, who came to support their champions in intense and strategic duels.
Ephrem Excels in the Épée Category
In the men's épée category (40 years and older), Marwan Ephrem of the al-Bourj Aintoura Club triumphed, securing the gold medal after an extremely contested final against his own coach, Mahmoud Ali Ahmad. This match was a true tactical battle, where Ephrem exploited his opponent’s weaknesses with his technical mastery and methodical approach to combat.
Imad Nahas (Mont-La-Salle Club) and Roger Tanios (al-Bourj Aintoura Club) shared third place after a series of demanding bouts, where their determination and skill were not quite enough to reach the final. Nevertheless, their performances were of the highest caliber, showcasing the quality of this category.
Mahmoud Ali Ahmad Triumphs in Foil
In the men’s foil (40 years and older), Mahmoud Ali Ahmad confirmed his status as the favorite, winning the gold with a decisive victory over Imad Nahas in the final. Ahmad, known for his speed and precision, dominated the match by setting a fast pace and delivering fluid attacks. His strategic approach, marked by near-perfect anticipation, proved crucial in this high-level contest.
The two fencers, Roger Tanios and Marwan Ephrem, both from the al-Bourj Aintoura Club, finished in third place, having delivered strong performances throughout the competition, but falling short in a fiercely contested field.
An Exceptional Double for Ahmad in Sabre
The true standout performance of the day came from Mahmoud Ali Ahmad, who achieved an impressive double by winning the sabre category (40 years and older) as well. In a very tactical final, Ahmad outfoxed the attacks of Imad Nahas, once again his opponent, with a perfect blend of technique and strategy. Despite Nahas' fighting spirit, Ahmad dominated the fight with flawless striking precision.
Emile Karam, from the Sporting High Club, took third place after a solid run, but could not match the technical superiority of the top two fencers. His performance was, however, praised, allowing him to distinguish himself among the best in this category.
Rigorous Officiating Under the Guidance of Ziad el-Jalbout
All the matches were officiated by international referee Ziad el-Jalbout, ensuring strict and impartial arbitration throughout the competition. The technical committee, led by Asian referee Antoine Oneissi, oversaw the smooth conduct of the matches and ensured the strict application of the rules, creating a framework conducive to high-level performances.
At the end of the competition, Rabih Reaidi, a member of the board of directors of the Lebanese Fencing Federation, presented trophies and medals to the winners. It was a moment of recognition for these seasoned fencers, who continue to proudly represent Lebanese fencing even after many years of practice.
A High-intensity Spectacle and a Testament to Lebanese Perseverance
This competition not only rewarded the veteran champions, but it also provided a thrilling spectacle, showcasing the passion and perseverance of Lebanese fencers, determined to remain references in their discipline even beyond their forties.
Lebanese Fencing: A Discipline on the Rise
With such impressive performances, this championship once again proves that Lebanese fencing, across all its categories, remains a benchmark in the region. Thanks to seasoned athletes and high-quality competitions, Lebanon continues to shine on the regional stage.
