There is "no excuse" for rejecting the ceasefire in Lebanon negotiated by the United States and France, said Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, on Wednesday.

"Let’s hope that today the government of (Benjamin) Netanyahu will approve the ceasefire agreement proposed by the United States and France," he said on the sidelines of a G7 meeting near Rome. "No more excuses, no more additional requests, stop these fights, stop killing people, and let’s start thinking about peace," he stressed.

The Israeli security cabinet is expected to decide on Tuesday whether to approve a ceasefire in the war against Hezbollah, with the United States stating that an agreement is "close."

"We think we are at the point where we are close to an agreement," said John Kirby, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, while cautioning that nothing is final and urging caution.

"Let’s put pressure on Israel to approve the ceasefire proposal today," Borrell said on Tuesday, expressing concern after hearing "statements from extremist ministers in the Israeli government who are eager to continue the bombings."

"A ceasefire is absolutely necessary if we want hundreds of thousands of displaced people to return home," he said, lamenting that "the entire south of Lebanon has been destroyed."
