The Lebanese national basketball team triumphed 99-77 against the United Arab Emirates in a match they controlled from start to finish during the second window of qualifications for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup.
Thanks to this victory, Lebanon, currently ranked 28th in the world and 5th in Asia, takes the sole lead in Group 6 with 6 points. On the other hand, the United Arab Emirates, ranked 113th in the world and 25th in Asia, could not resist Lebanon’s technical superiority. The match, held at the Shabab al-Ahli Sports Hall in Dubai, took place in front of a large crowd, especially the Lebanese diaspora, who celebrated the victory as a gift for Lebanon on the occasion of its 81st Independence Day, amidst the country’s difficult circumstances. This win further solidifies Lebanon’s status as the favorites in this group.
Strong Start
Lebanon quickly took the lead from the first quarter, winning the period 26-20. The match began with both teams competing at a fast pace, but Lebanon imposed its dominance, led by solid team play.
In the second quarter, Lebanon extended its lead to 48-35 by halftime, showcasing superiority both offensively and defensively.
Lebanon strengthened its lead in the third quarter, which ended with a score of 78-54.
The final period was a formality, and despite a few attempts at a comeback from the Emirates, Lebanon won with a final score of 99-77.
Spellman’s Outstanding Performance
Omari Spellman, who had faced much criticism recently, responded with an impressive performance.
The player scored 19 points, making a significant contribution to his team’s victory. His physical form and involvement were evident throughout the match, showing that he had overcome past criticism.
Wael Arakji also shone with 16 points, providing leadership and creativity on the court. Sergio el-Darwish added 15 points, with several decisive shots that helped Lebanon maintain a comfortable lead. With this victory, Lebanon is getting closer to qualifying for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. The next match will be played on Monday, November 25, at 4:00 PM, against Syria, again in Dubai. A victory in this game will secure Lebanon’s qualification for the 2025 Asia Cup, even before the third qualification window scheduled for next February.
Historically, the Lebanese team has reached the podium at the Asia Cup four times, finishing second in 2001, 2005, 2007, and 2022, and has participated in eight editions of the continental tournament.
