On Lebanon's Independence Day this year, the Coordinating Committee of Lebanese-Canadians (CCLC) issued a stark message about the country's dual occupations by Iran and Israel, calling for unity among opposition forces to reclaim Lebanon's sovereignty. With one third of the population displaced, widespread destruction in the South and Beqaa regions, and rising casualties, the CCLC condemned the current situation as Lebanon faces a future of uncertainty.
The committee criticized Speaker Nabih Berri for representing Hezbollah’s interests in negotiations, accusing him of undermining Lebanon's constitution and blocking any parliamentary involvement in critical decisions. They stressed that any agreement failing to implement UN Resolutions 1701, 1559, and 1680, particularly those calling for the disarmament of militias, would risk internal conflict and would not be recognized by the Lebanese people unless signed by a legitimately elected president and government.
In response to the political paralysis, the CCLC called for the unification of all opposition forces — political parties, civil society, intellectuals, and media — to launch a “new Cedars Independence Revolution” akin to the 2005 uprising. They urged the international community to act to free Lebanon from Iranian influence and hold Iran accountable for the war’s devastation, including through sanctions to fund Lebanon’s reconstruction.
The CCLC believes Lebanon can rebuild itself as a peaceful nation, protected by its national Army, and reclaim its historical role in the Arab world. They called for immediate unity among the Lebanese people to restore the country’s full sovereignty and independence.
