French President Emmanuel Macron met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Tuesday on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio, as observed by AFP journalists.
On the first day of the summit on Monday, Macron spoke of a "very fractured" world order and accused the two largest economies on the planet, the United States and China, of "not respecting" international trade rules.
Xi, for his part, noted that the world is entering "a new period of turbulence and change."
In May, Macron hosted Xi during his state visit to Paris.
Both Xi and Macron have been engaged in numerous bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G20, which brings together the leaders of the world's largest economies.
While the summit has focused on climate issues and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, many participants are bracing for the imminent return of Donald Trump to the White House.
Outgoing US President Joe Biden represented his country at the summit but appeared diminished as his peers looked past him politically, focusing instead on Trump and the "America First" policies he has pledged to reinstate.
In comments to journalists late Monday, Macron stated that Europe has a role to play in supporting "a collective multilateral effort," given the increased trade confrontations between the United States and China.
