Vladimir Shklyarov, an undisputed star of the Mariinsky Theatre, tragically passed away last Saturday in Saint Petersburg at the age of only 39. His untimely death marks an immense loss for contemporary ballet.

A true icon of the Russian artistic scene, Vladimir Shklyarov had, over the course of a brilliant and intense career, established himself as one of the most talented and charismatic dancers of his generation. Appointed "Principal Dancer" of the Mariinsky in 2011, he dazzled audiences in iconic lead roles such as The Nutcracker and Giselle, bringing his art to international prominence.

From the Metropolitan Opera in New York to the Royal Opera House in London, the world's greatest stages had the privilege of hosting this extraordinary artist, whose talent was recognized with the most prestigious awards. In 2020, his homeland honored him with the title of "Honored Artist of Russia."

While the exact circumstances of his death remain unclear, one thing is certain: Vladimir Shklyarov, who was scheduled to undergo spinal surgery on Monday, leaves behind the image of a man who devoted his life to his art, pushing his body to its limits and sometimes beyond.

The ballet community now mourns the loss of one of its brightest ambassadors. The funeral, set for Thursday in Saint Petersburg, will begin in the main hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, followed by a ceremony at the Nikolskaïa Cathedral and burial at the Smolenskoïé Cemetery. A final farewell to a man whose talent and passion left an indelible mark on the history of dance.
