Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati underlined upon his arrival in Beirut on Wednesday, his country’s full alignment with Lebanon’s demand for an immediate ceasefire and an unconditional end to Israel’s incessant attacks against Lebanon.
“Egypt’s mission is to mobilize international and Arab partners to press for an immediate ceasefire,” Abdel Aati declared, adding that Cairo’s communication in that regard is ongoing with regional and international players, including the US, France, the EU, and Arab countries.
“Lebanon has Egypt's full support and we will provide all forms of assistance to help the Lebanese people during this crisis,” said the Egyptian minister, who arrived on board of a plane carrying humanitarian assistance.
Abdel Aati described Monday’s Arab-Islamic summit in Saudi Arabia as crucial for its unified stance and resolution, calling for ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
He also emphasized the need to prevent further expansion of hostilities, avoid a regional war, and secure a ceasefire well before the new US administration under Donald Trump takes office on January 20.
Following meetings with Speaker of the House Nabih Berri and Army Commander-in-chief Gen. Joseph Aoun, Abdel Aati highlighted the urgency of ending the presidential vacancy, stressing that the choice of a new president of the republic “should be solely a Lebanese decision, free from any foreign influence,” while advocating for a “consensus” head of state.
He also underlined the necessity of implementing UN Resolution 1701 and expressed Cairo’s full support to the Lebanese army role in maintaining security and stability.
Abdel Aati is to hold meetings later on Wednesday with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikai and Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib.
