In light of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the speaker of the Iranian Shura Council, Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf, discussed the situation in Lebanon and diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Monday.
Qalibaf, who had a phone call with his Lebanese counterpart, stated that “Iran supports and stands next to Lebanon in implementing UN Resolution 1701.”
The resolution, adopted in 2006, calls for a full cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, the withdrawal of Hezbollah and all armed forces in the South to the north of the Litani river, the disarmament of Hezbollah and other armed groups in accordance with Resolution 1559, and the deployment of the Lebanese Army along with UNIFIL forces.
