Despite the ongoing war in Lebanon, Lebanese judoka Karen Chammas was a ray of sunshine amid the surrounding gloom, making a splash at the 2024 Saudi Games.
Against a backdrop of conflict in Lebanon, Lebanese judoka Karen Chammas managed to bring a breath of hope and pride to the 2024 Saudi Games. This major sporting event, which took place over two weeks and included 53 disciplines, saw Chammas shine as the only non-Saudi athlete in the women's under 63 kg category. She had the privilege of participating in these Games thanks to her five-year residency in Saudi Arabia.
A sporting achievement amid adversity
During this competition, Chammas demonstrated her talent and determination by winning three consecutive fights. She first defeated Hessa al-Maliki, then Sondos al-Shareef, and finally Rima al-Sudairy. Her winning streak unfortunately came to an end in the final match against Ghada al-Ataik, earning her a silver medal and an $80,000 prize. It should be noted that this podium represents an extraordinary sporting achievement for Chammas, who is making her comeback to competition after a 10-year absence. "I am very happy with my result," declared the Lebanese champion after the awards ceremony, "and I dedicate this victory to my fellow citizens who are going through an extremely difficult time."
An impressive journey
Born on June 29, 1993, in Amioun, Chammas has an impressive track record. She represented Lebanon at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010, where she ranked 7th in the world, as well as at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. For over 20 years, she has been considered one of Lebanon's top national athletes. She was also the first Lebanese woman to participate in an Olympic judo tournament.
An athlete with multiple talents
Currently, Chammas is a sports management expert and public relations specialist at Sports Marketing Group (SMG). This dynamic agency offers tailored communication services to sports teams, brands and events around the world. In her role, she coordinates campaigns aimed at increasing brand visibility and works on notable projects such as the World Combat Games, Saudi Games and the Dakar Rally.
Before joining SMG, Karen was responsible for the Jr. NBA League project for the National Basketball Association (NBA) in Lebanon for over five years, playing a key role in promoting basketball among youth. Her varied experience in sports, combined with her training in sports management, allows her to bring a unique perspective to her current role.
Chammas is also committed to advancing women's sports. As a sports coordinator at the Lebanese American University of Jbeil, she managed sports facilities, organized events, and worked to improve Lebanese women’s representation in sports. She aspires to join the board of directors of the Lebanese Judo Federation, where women are curretly underrepresented.
A bright sporting moment
With her remarkable performances in judo and basketball, as well as her unwavering commitment to women's sports, Chammas continues to inspire future generations while strengthening Lebanon's presence on the international stage.
