Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai emphasized the “absolute necessity to extend the term of the Army Commander (General Joseph Aoun) due to the current exceptional circumstances,” in accordance with the best interests of the country at this time. Rai pointed out that this step is essential because of “the three-year-long presidential vacancy, the expanding war in Lebanon as well as the unity, stability, and cohesion of the army.”
In his Sunday sermon, Rai commented on the “significant setback for our children and youth” during the academic year. “The loss of the academic year for students in both public and private schools—filled with displaced people or located in areas affected by Israeli airstrikes and intentional destructive shelling—is a significant setback for our children and youth.” He stressed that the relevant ministry and government “must find better locations for the displaced and ensure education and protection for our upcoming generations.”
He also joined members of parliament and other figures in appealing to UNESCO to protect Lebanon's archaeological and historical sites from Israeli airstrikes on Baalbeck, Tyre, Sidon and other historical sites, which are part of the world heritage. In an urgent appeal to the international community, a group of Lebanese parliamentarians called on UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay on Thursday to intervene and protect Lebanon’s cultural heritage sites, which are facing mounting threats due to the ongoing Israeli attacks and destruction.
Rai also expressed hope that Donald Trump’s election would help Lebanon ensure a ceasefire and elect a new president.
