Opposition MP Mark Daou deconstructed Hezbollah Secretary General Naim Qassem's populist rhetoric, urging him to “stop selling illusions and sending young people to certain death.”
“Sheikh Qassem, it seems that no one has informed you that the terrain has not induced any change in the balance of power (with Israel). Thirty-seven Lebanese villages have been destroyed, and the fighting is taking place in localities far from the border, while the raids have extended to Baalbeck and Ayto,” in the Zgharta caza, he said in a statement following the televised speech delivered by the Hezbollah leader on Wednesday afternoon.
Hezbollah's leader had said that in the war between his group and Israel, “it's the terrain that will decide,” promising his audience a certain victory that is possible, he said, “because of the Islamist doctrine and the determination of Hezb fighters who are not afraid to die.”
“Even if the Hezb will continue to resist militarily, in practice it has not succeeded in facing up to the (Israeli) offensive and protecting Lebanese localities from systematic occupation, dynamiting, and destruction,” continued Daou, believing that “the Israelis have, on the other hand, achieved their objectives.”
“They pushed you away from the border. They destroyed your infrastructure and your offensive power, your advanced defense lines, your depots, and your leadership. And if Lebanon is going to resist, it's not because of your weapons or your allegiance to Iran, but because the Lebanese are attached to their land and their will to live,” he asserted.
Daou added, “Stop selling illusions. The days when you did this, when you spouted lies by force of arms, and the stories of the (pro-Iranian) axis, the cobwebs, the unity of the fronts and the tunnels, have come to an end. All that came to an end when you collapsed in a matter of weeks,” following Israel's major offensive against Hezbollah.
For the MP, it is vital that the Lebanese rely on their sole state. “The best thing you could do today is to put yourself and your fighters on the ground at the disposal of the Lebanese State and army, instead of sending them to certain death for the benefit of the negotiations Iran wants to conduct” with the United States, concluded Daou.
