The Beirut Shorts International Film Festival has reached a significant milestone, becoming an Oscars Qualifying Film Festival—the first in Lebanon and one of the few in the Arab world. This recognition offers a unique opportunity for Lebanese and international filmmakers, as winning films in the categories of Best Live Action, Best Documentary, and Best Animation, to be now eligible for Oscars consideration.
This achievement underscores the festival’s dedication to amplifying creative voices and bridging cultures, even amid challenging times. With this new status, Beirut Shorts solidifies its position on the global stage, allowing exceptional filmmakers to present their stories and artistry in Hollywood’s most prestigious competition.
"We are thrilled to offer a platform that acts as a shortcut to the Oscars for filmmakers who inspire, inform, and challenge audiences," said Sam Lahoud, Founder and President of the Beirut Film Society and Festival Director. "This is a proud moment for our festival and for all who believe in cinema’s power to transcend borders and foster understanding."
The festival’s new theme, “Rebirth”, reflects the resilience of the Lebanese people and the transformative power of art and film, as Lebanon faces ongoing hardship, with over a million displaced, countless injured, and recovery efforts underway.
