Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army Herzi Halevi have decided to create a new division aimed at "protecting Israel's eastern borders," according to a statement published on Wednesday on X by the Israeli army’s Arabic-speaking spokesperson, Avichay Adraee.

The objective of the move is to strengthen defense in the border area with Jordan and to combat arms smuggling and "terrorist" attacks while enhancing "cooperation with the Jordanian army," according to the statement.

On October 18, two members of the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood were killed after opening fire on Israeli soldiers south of the Dead Sea. An Israeli soldier and a reservist were lightly wounded in the exchange of gunfire.

On September 8, three Israeli guards were killed by a Jordanian truck driver who opened fire at the Allenby crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan, controlled by Israel.
