Le Monnot Theater recently brought together Lebanon’s cultural figures to spark dialogue amidst the country's ongoing crisis. Aiming to find solutions and generate fresh ideas for the cultural sector, the theater's director, Josyane Boulos, shared with This Is Beirut the vision that emerged from these pivotal discussions.
Under the direction of Josyane Boulos, actors, directors, and creators gathered at Le Monnot Theater for a series of reflective meetings on Lebanon’s cultural future, seeking concrete ways to support and revive the sector. These exchanges offered a valuable space for the artistic community and theater audience, fostering support, dialogue, and sharing. Josyane Boulos presented the initial ideas and potential solutions arising from these encounters.
How did the idea for this gathering come about?
In such uncertain times, these discussions are essential to preserve and strengthen our sector. Theater in Lebanon, facing multiple crises, needs spaces for reflection and solidarity to remain resilient. We exchanged ideas to ensure that our work stays relevant and responsive to the needs of our community.
Do you think this initiative can have a lasting impact?
The situation remains challenging, and we expect uncertainty to persist. However, we are committed to sustaining this momentum by creating programs, workshops, and productions that inspire, offer hope, and strengthen community ties.
Who attended this first gathering?
We organized four sessions that brought together nearly 60 participants, including the Le Monnot Theater team, actors, directors, and various creators engaged in the local scene. Each participant shared unique perspectives on facing current challenges and moving forward despite adversity.
What conclusions did you draw?
Adaptability and creativity are our strongest assets. The discussions led to ideas for developing performances and programs that resonate with the local context and attract a diverse audience. Now it’s time to turn these reflections into tangible actions to revitalize our sector. We have already launched a survey to understand our audience’s perspective better and a social media campaign to emphasize the importance of theater in times of crisis.
What future do you envision for the theater in these circumstances?
Despite adversity, we remain optimistic about Le Monnot Theater’s role. We aim to make it a pillar of transformation and inspiration. Theater can become a space where society’s voices are heard, where meaningful conversations come to life, and where the audience can find a refuge of hope and resilience.
