In his first reaction to the Israeli airstrikes that hit military targets in Iran on Saturday, Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian stated that his country “will respond to any act of foolishness with wisdom and intelligence,” according to Iran International.

He also mourned the loss of four Iranian soldiers in the Israeli strikes, claiming that "the sons of Iran gave their lives defending our borders.”

“My condolences go to the valiant members of our military, law enforcement, their honorable families, and the heroic people of our nation,” he added.

Khamenei’s comments

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday said Israel's attack on the Islamic republic "should neither be exaggerated nor minimized."

"The evil perpetrated by the Zionist regime (Israel) two nights ago must not be exaggerated or minimised," he said in a post on X.

Without elaborating, he described the deadly attack as a "miscalculation."

The Israeli security cabinet is set to meet on Sunday evening at the Ministry of Defense to discuss Iran's possible response to Israel's attack, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported.
