Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati disclosed that diplomatic communications have escalated in recent hours in anticipation of the UN Security Council meeting, with the aim of securing a renewed ceasefire and applying increased pressure to halt Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

"There are ongoing contacts between the United States and France, which requested the Security Council meeting, to revive the declaration of a temporary ceasefire, allowing for a resumption of political solution discussions,” he added on Thursday.

Mikati reiterated “our readiness to implement Resolution 1701, provided that Israel fully adheres to its terms” during the diplomatic communications.

He emphasized “the priority of stopping the Israeli aggression, which is causing a high number of casualties in violation of all international laws and conventions."

The PM expressed his “fear if matters escalate, that the conflict could spread across the entire region."

Emergency Plan

Mikati highlighted that the government's emergency plan for assisting the displaced is ongoing, with regular reviews to address any issues. “The large scale of displacement requires intensified efforts to meet needs,” he said. He emphasized the importance of support from friendly countries and international organizations. Mikati has also been in contact with Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi to address security issues and has called for the Central Security Council to meet and resolve existing gaps.
