Caretaker Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamiye stated that Lebanon has received only "commitments" and no "firm guarantees" that Israel would not bomb Beirut International Airport (BIA).
BIA is located near the southern suburb of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold that is now targeted daily by Israeli strikes.
Lebanese authorities "want to keep the land, sea and air terminals operational, especially BIA," he told AFP on Tuesday.
"The enemy (Israel) spares neither civilians nor residential buildings; how could they offer guarantees?" he added.
Following "international contacts," Lebanon has obtained only "commitments," he clarified. "And there is a big difference between firm guarantees and commitments."
Washington warned on Monday against any attack on the airport or the roads leading to it, to allow those who wish to leave Lebanon.
Despite strikes that sometimes target areas near the airport, the Lebanese national airline, Middle East Airlines, continues to operate flights daily.
Additionally, Hamiye dismissed Israeli accusations that weapons were being transported to Hezbollah via BIA and Lebanese border crossings.
"The Rafic Hariri Airport is under Lebanon's legal jurisdiction. Customs, General Security, Internal Security Forces and the army cooperate there," he affirmed, adding, “Any military aircraft or those carrying weapons must obtain prior authorization from the army."
