Kévin Germanier’s Creative Force of Upcycling
Swiss designer Kévin Germanier, a pioneer of upcycling and bold fashion, has dazzled Paris once again on September 24, 2024, at the Fashion Week.

At just 32, Swiss designer Kévin Germanier has made a name for himself in the fashion world with his unique approach to upcycling and his bold, colorful style. This Tuesday in Paris, he once again captured the spotlight, embodying the new wave of unapologetic, vibrant designers who are redefining the codes of haute couture in the French capital.

Nicknamed the “Frankenstein” of fashion, Kévin Germanier proudly describes himself as an experimenter, a tinkerer who works with materials often considered waste. “In fashion, everything needs to be slick, but I see myself a bit like Frankenstein with my little experiments,” he admits, embracing his love for playful, colorful designs that combine pearls, pompoms, and other unexpected elements.

This summer, Kévin Germanier had the honor of designing the closing ceremony costume for the Paris Olympics, creating the famous "Golden Voyager" outfit. Hailed by Vogue as "the most impressive costume of the ceremony," the golden suit turned the designer into the star of the evening. The outfit, part wasp, part mosquito, part firework, captivated the world's attention and garnered widespread admiration online.

Kévin Germanier’s design philosophy is rooted in upcycling: using fabric scraps, unsold stock, or even damaged materials. It all started during an internship in Hong Kong, where he found bags of pearls faded by the sun. Since then, he has continued to transform waste into unique fashion pieces. “Upcycling isn’t just going to a vintage shop and making something with a t-shirt. It’s really working with trash,” he explains.

Born in the Swiss canton of Valais, Kévin Germanier grew up watching his mother and grandmother sew flowers onto worn-out clothes, breathing new life into them. This creative approach led him to enroll at Central Saint Martins in London. Now based in Paris, Kévin Germanier continues to perfect his craft while maintaining a pragmatic mindset. Aware that fashion is also a business, he is always searching for that standout product that will sell like hotcakes.

With his quirky sense of humor and entrepreneurial spirit, Kévin Germanier has found his way into the wardrobes of celebrities like Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. Ambitious as ever, he now dreams of becoming the artistic director at Dior, where he hopes to "really make a difference." But for Germanier, the key is never losing the joy of creation. “As long as I’m having fun, I’ll keep going. When it stops being fun, I’ll stop,” he says with conviction.
