Shogun triumphed at the Emmy Awards, breaking records with 18 trophies and becoming the first non-English series to win.
The 76th Emmy Awards ceremony saw a groundbreaking win for Shogun, which took home 18 trophies, making it the first non-English language series to claim the Best Drama award. This adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, set in 17th-century Japan, defied expectations, with 70% of the dialogue in Japanese. Despite the language barrier, Shogun was hailed for its bold creative vision and exceptional execution.

Justin Marks, the show’s writer, praised FX and Disney for backing such an ambitious project. "You approved a high-budget, subtitled period drama where the climax is a poetry contest," Marks said in his speech.

Hiroyuki Sanada, who played a strategic samurai lord, made history as the first Japanese actor to win an Emmy for Best Actor. "This was a dream project where East meets West," Sanada commented, visibly moved. His co-star, Anna Sawai, who portrayed a fallen samurai’s daughter turned Catholic, won Best Actress. She emotionally described it as "the role of a lifetime."
This victory reflects a shifting trend in American audiences, following successes like Parasite and Squid Game. Shogun has proven that international productions can not only compete with American series, but also surpass them.
