The Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, has ruled out the possibility of Israel launching a full-scale war against Lebanon, “a war that could involve several countries in the region”, he said in an interview with the Catholic newspaper "Avvenire".
“The situation in the region is very dangerous, and what is happening threatens Europe and world peace”, said Berri, recalling that statements by US President Joe Biden confirm US opposition to a war against Lebanon, ‘as its repercussions would be catastrophic for Lebanon and the region’.
As for his position on the election of a President of the Republic after a vaccum of almost two years, Berri stressed that he had “asked the leaders of the parliamentary blocs to open the door to dialogue in order to reach an agreement on the contentious issues within the next seven to ten days at the latest”.
Referring to his meeting with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the president of Parliament mentioned that Cardinal Parolin had assured him that the Pope would visit Lebanon after the election of the President of the Republic.
