With 25 nominations, the epic series Shogun leads the race for the 2024 Emmy Awards, closely followed by the comedy The Bear and the return of True Detective.
The nominations for the 76th Emmy Awards ceremony, which will be held on September 15, 2024, in Los Angeles, were announced on Wednesday. The series Shogun, a captivating historical saga about 17th-century Japan, leads the pack with no less than 25 nominations.
Adapted from the famous novel by James Clavell, a bestseller from the 1970s, Shogun follows the journey of an English sailor shipwrecked on the Japanese coast at a time when the empire was still largely closed to the outside world. The series then delves into court intrigues and the power struggles of the feudal shogunate. Pete Hammond, a columnist for Deadline, believes this series “has everything going for it in terms of acting, writing and direction.”
Despite the extensive use of subtitles, the jury recognized the quality of the series by nominating two Asian actors: Anna Sawai, in the role of a Japanese noblewoman converted to Christianity, and Hiroyuki Sanada, portraying a dignitary skilled with the sword and a shrewd strategist. The latter told AFP that this nomination was “a true lesson in humility” and “a great opportunity to share [their] culture with the world.”

Shogun, produced by FX (Disney), will compete against the final season of The Crown, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and The Three-Body Problem for the Best Drama Series award.
In the comedy category, The Bear makes a splash with 23 nominations, a record. The second season of this series follows the transformation of a Chicago sandwich shop into a Michelin-starred restaurant, featuring tantalizing shots of irresistible dishes. Despite its serious themes like grief and addiction, The Bear remains classified as a comedy and will face Hacks, Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Lastly, the miniseries category marks the strong return of True Detective. This police anthology, which changes its storyline and characters each season, made a sensation 10 years ago. The fourth season, set in the polar night of Alaska, has been widely praised and garnered 19 nominations.
Its main competitor will be Beef, nominated 11 times. This Netflix series tells the true story of a Scottish comedian harassed by a woman suffering from psychiatric disorders. However, a British woman who claims to have inspired the character of the harasser has sued Netflix for defamation, demanding $170 million in compensation.
The year 2024 will celebrate the Emmy Awards twice, with the last ceremony having taken place in January due to the strikes that paralyzed Hollywood last year. Professionals and fans eagerly await to see who will win the prestigious statuettes at this 76th edition, which promises to be exciting given the nominations.
