Exploring Villa-Lobos' Musical World at Instituto Guimarães Rosa
The Instituto Guimarães Rosa in Beirut is hosting a free conference on July 9 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to celebrate the musical legacy of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Presented by Étienne Kupélian, the event, held in partnership with Les Musicales de Baabdath, will explore Villa-Lobos' diverse contributions to classical music.

The Instituto Guimarães Rosa in Beirut is hosting an insightful conference dedicated to the monumental musical legacy of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. This event promises to be a captivating exploration of Villa-Lobos' contributions to classical music. The session, presented by esteemed musician and scholar Étienne Kupélian, will be held at the institute's Ashrafieh location.

Heitor Villa-Lobos was a trailblazer in Brazilian music, known for his ambitious efforts to synthesize the diverse musical traditions of Brazil. An autodidact, Villa-Lobos developed his craft by learning from street musicians and deciphering classical compositions on his own. His music, which vividly illustrates indigenous myths, is celebrated for its spontaneity and epic style, reflecting the vibrant spirit of the Brazilian people. His extensive body of work spans solos, melodies, chamber music, choral pieces, and especially orchestral compositions, where he made his most significant mark.


Étienne Kupélian, the presenter of the conference, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussion. Since 1981, he has served as a professor of oboe and chamber music at the Lebanese National Conservatory of Music, where he also completed his studies. He further refined his skills in Paris, earning a Concert License in Oboe from the École Normale Supérieure de Musique. Étienne Kupélian has had a distinguished career as a soloist, performing across Lebanon, France, the United States, the Gulf countries, and major cities in the Middle East. A founding member of the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra, he has also contributed to classical music programming on Radio-Liban and Radio Mont-Liban. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, the French Minister of Culture named Étienne Kupélian an Officer of Arts and Letters in 2012.
