Two Proposals from Opposition MPs for Presidential Election
On Thursday, the opposition MPs presented their vision for a roadmap based on two practical proposals as an urgent solution to end the disruption and save the country from its constitutional crisis. During a press conference in Parliament, they assured that this initiative stems from a position of responsibility and the constitutional duty of Parliament as the representative of the Lebanese people. They emphasized their commitment to conducting the presidential elections within the proper constitutional framework, without creating precedents or customs.

First Proposal:

MPs meet in the Parliament and consult, without an official call, formalization, or specific framework, to respect the rules related to electing the President as stipulated in the Lebanese constitution. The consultation period should not exceed 48 hours. Regardless of the consultation results, MPs should proceed to an open electoral session with successive rounds until a President is elected as per the constitution, without closing the session’s minutes. All parties should commit to attending the rounds and ensuring the quorum.

Second Proposal:

The Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri called for a session to elect the President and preside over it according to his constitutional powers. If no president is elected in the first round, the session remains open, and MPs and blocs consult outside the chamber for a maximum of 48 hours. They should then return to the general chamber for consecutive voting rounds, at a rate of four rounds per day, without interruption and without closing the session’s minutes, until a President is elected. All parties should commit to attending the rounds and ensuring the quorum."

According to the statement, the opposition MPs reaffirmed their stance on the presidential election with a roadmap to overcome obstacles, complete the process, and end Lebanon's political paralysis.

Amid rising dangers and the ongoing presidential vacancy, the opposition MPs emphasize their commitment to electing a president suitable for Lebanon's current stage, in line with constitutional procedures. They seek a president who represents Lebanon's interests internationally, safeguards the constitution and sovereignty, implements international resolutions, embodies the majority's will, and is not imposed by force.

The opposition MPs have consistently attended all previous election sessions, the statement added. To resolve the presidential crisis, they shifted from their primary candidate to a middle-ground candidate and showed openness to initiatives for an open electoral session with successive rounds. This aligns with the Quintet Committee's roadmap from its Doha meeting, urging MPs to elect a president who embodies integrity, unites the nation, and prioritizes Lebanon's interests.
