The USJ Choir and Yasmina Sabbah Reinvent Rock

On July 13 and 14, 2024, the Casino du Liban will resonate with an exceptional musical fusion. The Symphonic Rock concert by the Saint Joseph University (USJ) Choir promises to brilliantly combine rock classics with symphonic music. At the helm, the passionate and visionary conductor Yasmina Sabbah reveals the behind-the-scenes of this highly anticipated event.
Accompanied by the Jeunesses Musicales Orchestra and handpicked international musicians, the USJ Choir is set to deliver a performance as unprecedented as it is captivating. Yasmina Sabbah enthusiastically shares that “the concert’s theme aims to merge these two genres by revisiting iconic hits from Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Bon Jovi and other rock legends.” She proudly notes that the songs have been reinvented and reorchestrated specifically for the USJ Choir by talented composers Ayad and Sary Khalifé, Vincenzo De Filippo and Nadim Tarabay.
These music artisans have explored three distinct approaches to enhance the rock pieces. Ayad and Sary Khalifé have “deconstructed” rock songs to “reinvent” them, while preserving the essence of the original melodies. “Their style pays tribute to great classical music composers with remarkable harmonic richness, a wide vocal range, complex orchestration, and symphonic treatment. Ayad and Sary Khalifé introduce new musical ideas, adding a captivating dimension to the musical work.”
On the other hand, “Italian composer Vincenzo de Filippo blends rock songs with symphonic excerpts or passages from the classical repertoire, such as Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra,” details the conductor. She adds, “This bold fusion incorporates symphonic elements into rock, giving iconic tracks increased harmonic, choral, and orchestral richness.”
Finally, Nadim Tarabay brings, according to the young musician, additional depth and richness to the singing, while “preserving the vibrant energy of the original songs.” She further explains that the repertoire includes complex choral parts, with harmonies ranging from 4 to 8 voices, requiring “a wide vocal range and rhythmic precision.”
According to the maestra, these innovative arrangements succeed in reconciling classical demands with the power of popular rock music. “The approach taken represents a true innovation, distinguished by its uniqueness. It is not limited to a simple superimposition of orchestral accompaniment but reconstructs the music in a complex and unprecedented way,” she proudly states.
To bring this bold fusion to life, the Choir will be supported by a host of talented musicians: the Jeunesses Musicales Orchestra, composed of musicians from the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra and young talented musicians from Lebanon. “For some wind and brass instruments, musicians from Romania will be solicited. A rock band, composed of two Lebanese guitarists and a drummer invited from Spain thanks to the collaboration of the Spanish Embassy, will also be present,” notes Yasmina Sabbah.
This project could not be realized without substantial financial support. In this regard, the conductor expresses her gratitude to the friends of the USJ Choir, sponsors and the USJ team for “their invaluable contribution,” while highlighting the particular difficulty of securing funds in these challenging times.

Over the years, the USJ Choir has reinvented itself and diversified its repertoire with boldness and creativity. “Each year, the Choir presents three major concerts, as well as two chamber music performances,” explains Yasmina Sabbah. “We strive to prepare at least one major classical repertoire concert annually, with the aim of enriching our classical palette by offering major works and pieces less performed in Lebanon.”
This quest for diversity is also reflected in the inclusion of “fusion programs that blend world music and contemporary compositions,” she adds. “These repertoires, seemingly simple, often prove more demanding than the classical repertoire. Finally, we commit to presenting an annual popular music concert, approached with a creative approach. This diversity testifies to a rich and intentionally crafted identity.”
Behind this eclectic programming lies hard work and consuming passion. Composed of 80 dedicated singers, the university choir meets two to three times a week to rehearse and perfect their singing. “These talented singers deserve special recognition for their ability to master varied repertoires. Their dedication is a true sacrifice in the name of music and the Lebanese cultural scene,” insists Yasmina Sabbah.
Beyond the musical feat, the Symphonic Rock concert also aims to carry a message of solidarity. “We invite the public to support the CCCL by adding a donation to their ticket purchase, a way to contribute to a noble initiative while enjoying the concert,” she concludes with conviction.
So, mark your calendars for July 13 and 14, 2024, at the Casino du Liban for an exceptional musical experience, combining rock and symphonic music in a powerful and moving harmony. The USJ Choir promises to leave a lasting impression with Symphonic Rock, an event celebrating both the richness of music and the generosity of the heart.
