On July 9, the Zaki Nassif Ensemble will pay a musical tribute to the famous Lebanese composer in the gardens of the Sursock Museum, coinciding with both the 20th anniversary of the program and the 20th anniversary of his passing.
On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at 8:30 PM, music lovers have a date in the splendid garden of the Sursock Museum for an exceptional concert. The Zaki Nassif Ensemble of oriental music, composed of talented choristers and musicians from the National Conservatory, will pay a vibrant tribute to the great Lebanese composer Zaki Nassif. This event will also mark the 20th anniversary of the “AUB Zaki Nassif Program for Music,” which works to spread authentic oriental music.
Under the direction of maestro Fadi Yaacoub, the Ensemble will perform a unique repertoire of songs and melodies composed by Zaki Nassif throughout his prolific career. The concert, titled “Zaki Nassif, from Motherhood to Brotherhood,” promises an evening rich in emotions and musical discoveries.
Zaki Nassif, born in 1916 in Machghara in the Bekaa Valley, is considered one of the founders of modern Lebanese song. Involved from a young age in folk music and poetry, he infused a new spirit into traditional music. In the 1940s and 50s, he was among the first composers to provide songs for the nascent Lebanese radio, brilliantly combining evocative lyrics, enchanting melodies, subtle orchestrations, and influences from folk dances.
During his career, Zaki Nassif composed more than 1100 works in various genres, performed by himself and many singers. His songs, often imbued with a patriotic sentiment, have become true classics of Lebanese musical heritage. His unique legacy continues to influence and inspire new generations of musicians and music lovers.
The concert at the Sursock Museum will be an opportunity to celebrate this immense artist, who passed away 20 years ago, but whose work remains more alive than ever. The Zaki Nassif Ensemble will perform the most significant compositions of the master, those that most brilliantly reflect Lebanese identity and culture. A true musical treasure, both traditional and innovative, that has captured the very essence of Lebanon.
This evening promises to be a moment of sharing and emotion, placing music at the heart of dialogue between cultures and generations. A must-attend event for all lovers of oriental music and the work of Zaki Nassif.
